Wondering if your wig is covered by insurance? We can help!

Hair loss can be traumatic as you are undergoing medical treatments, and finding a wig should not add to your stress. Here's the scoop on how to seek support from your insurance company.

Your insurance may cover some or all of the cost of a wig, known as a "cranial prosthesis" in medical terms. This applies to hair loss caused by chemotherapy, alopecia, or other medical conditions.

Here's how to find out:

  1. Call your insurance company. Ask if they cover cranial prostheses and the process for filing a claim.
  2. Get a prescription. Your doctor needs to write a prescription for a "cranial prosthesis" with procedure code A9282. Important note: avoid the word "wig" on the prescription as insurance considers wigs cosmetic.
  3. Doctor's note (optional but helpful). Ask your doctor to write a letter explaining your hair loss and how a wig can improve your well-being, and provide the confidence needed to start and complete your treatments.
  4. Keep receipts and documents. Save everything for tax purposes and any future claims.

What if insurance company says no?

  • Tax deduction: Payments towards your medical bills may be tax-deductible. Talk to a tax advisor.
  • Financial assistance: Reach out to organizations like the National Alopecia Areata Foundation or the American Cancer Society. They may offer financial aid or may refer you to organizations who may provide support for your specific condition.

Here are some details about specific insurance companies (check your benefits for your specific provider):

  • Blue Cross Blue Shield: May covers wigs for cancer treatment up to $350 (lifetime limit).
  • Aetna: May reimburse up to $1,000 for approved providers.
  • Tricare: Requires a doctor's prescription with code A9282.
  • Medicare: Doesn't cover wigs.
